I
would like to thank everybody who played for Osterley this year and
helped to allow Osterley to put a side out each week. A huge thank you
should clearly go to Geoff Upsdell for his extremely hard job of getting
players each week and his support he has provided throughout this season.
Without him we would not have had a team at all. I would also like to
thank John Green and the Osterley committee, who you don't always see,
who continue to ensure Osterley remains financially sufficient with
pitches to play on, kits being cleaned and Osterley remaining affiliated
to the leagues.
A special thank you to Wendy Gilchrist who has
kept the Osterley website running and updated this season. A final thank
you has to go to the some of the Old Isleworthian players who assisted
with the Osterley numbers and made us so welcome all season at the clubhouse.
Unfortunately, I will be saying farewell as Captain
to Osterley this year as I am to move to Australia in May. I have had
some great games of rugby and been with the club, on and off, for some
10 years now. I have met some great people, been on some great rugby
tours and made many friends. The club has had its highs and lows over
the years, as have many other clubs. The last two seasons haven't shown
the best Osterley has to offer. But I can guarantee that some of the
rugby that was played this season, when we did get it together. It not
only showed other clubs we wouldn't be beaten without a fight, even
in the face of being players down, but showed other clubs that Osterley
is still a side to be reckoned with. As Osterley continue to be passionate
about their club and the rugby they play. This season Ive seen
some fantastic rugby played from some very talented players. You know
who you all are. Please continue to keep Osterley going into the next
season.
With this season - Should there have been
a stronger base of regular players, that made themselves available each
week, and had there have been a few less injuries from some of the key
positions this season. Im sure the club would have ended the season
on a high. We would have also been able to sustain players for an end
of season Rugby Tour and the league table would have looked completely
different. There was clearly some misfortune with injuries.
I've had many great times and games with Osterley and wish others, to
continue to get the enjoyment out of the club that I have had pleasure
of 10 years if rugby with. There are a number of past and present players
who I wont get an opportunity to say my final farewells to in
the flesh. BUT I want to thank you all for your support this year and
hope to see some of you again at sometime in the future. I hope you
enjoyed the weekly match reports this year, that you can still see on
the website and feel free to stay in touch via e-mail. One final tip
for those who continue to play rugby and want to avoid injury.
Please, Don't forget to tape your ears up
or get out and buy yourself a scrum cap, as you never know who missed
their Saturday morning breakfast.
Happy rugby days to you all and thanks again,
Historically
the club evolved from players coming to work or study in London who
wished to play and enjoy the social aspects of rugby during their stay.
This is still true today with the membership of the club being more
diverse than most composed of both home & overseas players in equal
measures.
This makes for
a great social mix and is one of the reasons why the club has such a
vast past player's membership all of who still actively support the
club through subscriptions / sponsorship and by attending the two past
players days that are held each season.
So if you are
studying or working in London and you would like to play rugby or just
become a social member then please contact us.
Rugby is available
for all ages and levels of ability. We currently have 2 senior sides
the 1st XV competes in the Herts. & Middlesex 3 South League and
a 2nd XV made up of aspiring young players & vets.
Players wishing
to join Osterley RFC, please contact any of the following:
We are now ground sharing with Old Isleworthians
at Wood Lane (see Home Ground Link for directions) an arrangement that
worked very well at the end of last season.
