With the festive season over, the first game was going to be a test
of our fitness and ball handling skills after all those beers and mince
pies. The game started at a pace I've only seen occasionally in the
Osterley side. The first penalty kick soon went to Osterley from the
22 metre line 5 minutes into the game. This didn't go over and ultimately
was to be a valuable missed three points.
With the majority of the first half possession being with Osterley it
seemed it was only going to be time before a try came. But each time
we were missing that final pass.
The first try came after Dan Padbury made a break, he was pushed some
20 metres up the pitch by the forwards into their 22. A second phase
ball and a pass out to Richard who broke some tackles to score the first
try for Osterley. This came Five minutes before half time and was converted
by Dafydd. Quintin immediately replied with a kick up the field to return
the score just before the halftime whistle. Half time score 10-7 to
Quintin.
Second half Osterley spent the majority of time defending in our own
half. We were competing well in the lineout and the forwards continued
to work hard around the field especially Dan Sen and Paul T. Osterley
was under pressure in the scrum and William played fantastically at
scrum half managing to pass off some very scrappy scrummage ball. A
second try for Osterley came from a penalty move 10 metres away from
the Quintin try line. William to Chris D. then to Paul T. who was not
going to be stopped from scoring especially when their tackler was professionally
blocked by Richard. Great move and a great try. Quintin AGAIN replied
after some 20 minutes of defending from Osterley and they scored down
the blindside wing.
This was a game we should have won on the day missing some great chances.
But with some vital players missing through injuries and others being
unavailable it made the world of difference. This would have been a
report on a WIN without a doubt.
From those who played you will know that this game goes to show that
we have got what it takes to beat other teams in this league. There
was no reason why we shouldn't be beating these teams. Last time we
played Quintin it was 46-19. Some difference eh..
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE - Due to us not being able to practice
together. Get to the ground with plenty of time. We can then sort out
the best moves for the day, tidy these passes and MAKE THE DIFFERENCE.
(If anyone knows any other second row players bring them down.)
WELL DONE EVERYONE
Men of the match Richard, Dan P., William, Dan S. and Paul T.
